Ms. Powell's 9th graders visited the library for the last time this school year. Ms. Powell and I will continue our partnership next year since this project worked so well.
Ms. Vandermeer's 9th graders finished their research about Romeo and Juliet and Shakespeare.
Ms. Page brought her periods 2 and 7 to the library to learn about LAUSD's Digital Library and to research about endangered species.
As we move forward and start planning for next school year, it would be great to start with PD about resources available from MACHS Library and LAUSD's Digital Library. Every time I have the opportunity to introduce students to these resources, I get great student feedback on the quality of resources and ease of access and teacher feedback on the quality of the research turned in by students.
Community Outreach, Public Relations, and Displays:
MACHS Library hosted its first author visit by bringing not one but TWO amazing YA authors to our campus. During the first session, Liliam Rivera talked about her debut novel, The Education of Margot Sanchez, growing up in the Bronx, Hispanic pride, and the healing power of writing. For the second session, MACHS Library had the privilege to have Veronica Roth, author of the wildly successful trilogy Divergent, talking about the series and its very controversial end, her new book The Fates Divide, and signing books. We had more than 70 attendees per session! Students asked questions and took pictures with the authors. We hope that there will be many more author visits to come!
Our partnership with The Big Read helped MACHS Library take 35 students to the Grammy Museum to learn more about music, history, and politics. We had the museum all to ourselves for an hour. One of the current exhibitions allows visitors access to real instruments, and many of our students spent their visit playing guitar or drums. We will continue to work closely with The Big Read to allow our students more opportunities like this one.

With the help of the Library Practice students, we started inventoring the library. Every single book must be scanned. The collection has been inventoried once a year since MACHS Library opened back in 2011. Inventory allows us to keep an eye on losses and make plans for any given budget. This year, Integrated Library and Textbook Support Services has requested that all TLs run inventories so that we may have a better idea of the state of libraries across the district.
I am working on the last order of the school year. This will be a big one; we are ordering 235 books. The order includes the latest highlights in YA literature, how-to books (cooking, sewing, auto repair, entrepreneurship), language books, and manga/graphic novels.
Authors Speak: Lilliam Rivera and Veronica Roth (May 4)
SQ AP Testing (May 8-11, 15-16)
EL PAC/SBAC (May 21-25, 29-31)
Maintenance: MACHS Library will close from May 21 on due to textbook collection. It will reopen only during lunch but with no access to the books.
